Mould King Rollercoaster Review

Introduction

Rollercoaster builds are always eye-catching, and the Mould King 11013 Double Helix Roller Coaster certainly doesn’t disappoint on first glance. With over 2,100 pieces and a towering 55 cm height, it promises a sizeable display piece with a fully functioning lift and spiralling track. But does it live up to the hype? After finishing my build, here’s how it stacks up.

Basic Info

  • Set Name & Number: Double Helix Roller Coaster (11013)

  • Links to buy (affiliate): Aliexpress

  • Pieces: ~2,174

  • Dimensions: 58.5 × 45.6 × 55.7 cm (L × W × H)

  • Age Recommendation: 14+

  • Power: Motorised lift, requires 6 × AAA batteries

  • Features: Helix spiral track, working lift, ticket booth / theming details

It’s a large set, both in size and in piece count. If you’re thinking about adding it to your collection, make sure you’ve got the display space ready.

Build Experience

This is where my feelings were a bit mixed. The early part of the build felt tedious — it took almost half the instruction book before I even touched a rollercoaster rail, which is of course the exciting bit! A lot of time is spent on the support structure, base, and framing.

The baseplate is made up of lots of smaller plates rather than one solid one. That means it holds together fine once in place, but it’s flimsy if you try to move it. I ended up mounting mine onto two larger 32x32 LEGO plates for more stability, and I’d definitely recommend doing the same if you can. If you need some cheap 32x32 bases, you could pick some up from AliExpress here

Finished Model

Once complete, the Double Helix Roller Coaster makes a real impression. It’s tall, colourful, and the spiralling track is fun to watch in motion. The finished model feels satisfying and sizeable — very much a display piece as much as a functional one.

Does The Mould King Double Helix Roller Coaster Work??

The mechanism that drives the cars to the top works very well in principle. Each car has a 1x1 round stud on one side, which catches on the spinning mechanism that carries the cars in a circular motion to the top, while the cars come down the track and end up with the opposite side of the car against the mechanism, allowing them to pass by smoothly. Watching the cars crank up and then zip down the double helix is great fun. I've posted a video of it below.

That said, the system does need resetting from time to time, as some pieces can work loose with use. This is particularly the brown plates that "catch" the cars and push them upwards. It’s not a deal-breaker, but it’s worth knowing that it’s not completely “set and forget.”

I've added a short video below to show the mechanism from pressing the button, to the lifting mechanism, to the fun of the rollercoaster rolling.

Can LEGO Minifigures Ride The Mould King Double Helix Roller Coaster?

I would love to say yes at this point, but sadly my experiment found that the minifigures heads hit the structure and the rollercoaster comes to a stop!

The best that can be done is to remove the minfigures legs and pretend their legs are somewhere within the cart! This works okay and they go around well as a result, but it slightly spoils the immersion of them getting on the ride if you want to play out the whole queing system!

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Impressive size and presence

  • Functional and fun — the lift and track mechanism works well most of the time.

  • Satisfying finished build

  • Good value if bought at a discount.

Cons

  • Early build is a bit dull — a long wait before laying track

  • Baseplate design makes it hard to move without reinforcement

  • Mechanism loosens with repeated use and needs adjustment

  • Minifigures can't properly sit in the carts.

Tips for Buyers

  • Consider reinforcing the base with a larger LEGO plate (or similar)

  • Be patient during the early stages — the rails do come, eventually!

  • Check for discounts, as it’s much easier to recommend at a lower price point

  • Expect to occasionally tweak and reset the mechanism for smoother operation

Is The Mould King Double Helix Roller Coaster Worth It?

The Mould King Double Helix Roller Coaster isn’t a perfect set, but it is a satisfying one. Once built, it’s sizeable, fun, and makes for a striking display piece. The mechanism works well enough to impress, even if it needs a little maintenance along the way.

If you’re looking for a challenging build with a rewarding end result — and especially if you can snag it at a discount — this is a set worth picking up.

⭐ Rating: 4/5 — big, bold, and worth it for rollercoaster fans, but beware that parts may work loose over time and minifigures can't sit in it properly!
